The lower back is made up of the spine, ligaments and muscles. This part of the body is a strong structure and plays an important role in supporting the body when standing and when moving in several directions.

In addition, there is also a nerve that works to regulate movement and capture the excitation of the lower body. This spinal cord is inside the spinal cavity and is protected by nerve cushions.

Symptoms of low back pain

The level of back pain that each patient feels varies from mild to intense pain that interferes with the activity. But in general, the symptoms of low back pain have the characteristics of:

  • Back pain that feels like stabbed or electrocuted.
  • Back pain can only be felt only in the back or spreads to other parts of the body, for example, it spreads to the legs.
  • The pain is felt in certain positions, such as sitting or walking, but it improves when standing or lying down.
  • Back pain recurs or worsens after heavy lifting.
  • Back pain can be accompanied by muscle contractions (spasms).

Causes of low back pain

Low back pain can be felt for several days to several weeks, but generally less than 6 weeks. This pain can be caused by several things, such as injuries due to falls or collisions, excessive body movements or heavy lifting.

As we age, there will be weakness in the tissue in the joint space, so the spinal cushions protrude. This bump can compress the spinal cord (pinched nerve) and cause pain that radiates to the legs.

Deformity and spinal loss

Spinal deformities, such as kyphosis and bone loss (osteoporosis) can cause nervous stress and pain.

Disorders of the spinal cord

This condition can occur due to inflammation, pressure, lesions or tumors that compress the spinal cord.

Kidney stones

Usually, low back pain due to kidney stones feels only on one side of the back, and the pain feels sharp.

How to overcome low back pain

Here are some suggestions for overcoming lower back pain:

  1. Maintain body posture - Standing posture while sitting or standing can reduce excess pressure on the muscles and spine. So for posture correctness must use ergonomic office chairs.
  2. Reduce your weight - Try to reduce over weight because over weight also put high pressure on back bone and cause lower back pain.
  3. Stop smoking - Cigarettes can interrupt the flow of blood vessels in the spine and delay the healing of back pain.
  4. Give a cold compress to the back - The trick is to wrap the ice with a cloth and then paste it on the back for 15-20 minutes.
  5. Improve sleep position - It is recommended to sleep with your feet slightly higher. You can try to support your feet with a pillow while sleeping to reduce pressure on your back.
  6. Avoid heavy lifting - This is one of the most common triggers for the pain in lower back. Avoid it, so that back pain does not reappear.

If the above methods fail to treat back pain, you should immediately consult a doctor. The doctor may do several tests to confirm the diagnosis and determine the cause of low back pain.

After the diagnosis of low back pain and its cause is known, new doctors can provide the appropriate treatment, which includes:

1) Pain relievers

Severe lower back pain often requires pain medications from a doctor, such as NSAIDs, both in the form of oral and topical medications.

2) Narcotics and antidepressants

The use of these medications requires close supervision by a doctor, and usually only for a short period. This type of medicine is used to relieve very severe low back pain.

3) Physiotherapy

Physiotherapy with heat, ultrasonic waves or electrical stimulation can help to overcome spinal pain. After the pain has resolved, physiotherapy can be followed by special movement exercises to increase the strength and flexibility of the back tissues and muscles.

4) Acupuncture

It is believed that this alternative therapy helps reduce lower back pain. The results will be better if acupuncture is combined with physiotherapy and medications.

5) Spine surgery

In severe cases, such as abnormalities of the spinal structure or pinched nerves that do not improve with treatment, surgery may be performed to correct abnormalities in the nerves and spine.
