The UK government are going to give away free vitamin D supplements in
England, to the most vulnerable people, starting in January 2021.

This is because some 90% of vitamin D is created by the body exposed to sunlight. Only 10% of our vitamin D needs come from food and supplement sources, which provide easily absorbable forms of vitamin D.

These free deliveries of vitamin D supplies are also important in the view of recent discoveries that this vitamin helps to improve immunity and reduce rsik of respiratory system disease. It won't stop the COVID-19, but it might just help with some people with their immunity to better defend themselves against it.
