When you live in a metropolitan city such as New York, it take some effort to find
your places of peace and serenity, as part of your efforts to stay fit and healthy in NYC.

Living in a city as urban and metropolitan as New York is everybody's dream. However, living in this concrete jungle has its disadvantages. Especially when it comes to your health. Just think about it. There are millions of people and millions of cars polluting the city and the air. Moreover, it is one of the most expensive cities to live in, so it is going to be a challenge to find healthy but affordable food every day. And lastly, New York City is a city that never sleeps, so be prepared for some sleepless nights as well. But, do not worry. Staying healthy in NYC is possible, and here are some tips and tricks for healthy living.

1. Use Your Bike

Yes, New York is a huge place, we know. Sometimes, riding a bike to school or work is not a possibility. However, if you are lucky enough to live close to your office or university, do not commute using public transportation, use your bike instead. That is the best way to stay healthy in NYC. But, do not stop just there. Use your bike to go to the store and to run errands.

2. Walk as Much as You Can

If you had luck and found movers that provide cheap services, you probably have some money left to hit the streets and start exploring this majestic city. This is a perfect opportunity to get rid of all the stress caused by moving and be mesmerized by all the things New York has to offer. You can start by exploring your neighborhood and then check some of the museums, for example. If you like shopping, walking from store to store will also be good exercise.

3. Spend Time in Some of the Many Parks

It is true that New York is a concrete jungle and that there are not many green surfaces to choose from. But, those few that exist are truly amazing. For instance, you can visit Central Park and just enjoy nature. Or you can be more active and participate in some of the numerous events held there every day. You can do yoga, martial arts, aerobics, dancing, etc. Moreover, besides visiting Central Park, you can also visit, some smaller parks as well, like Bryant Park, High Lane, Battery Park, Hudson River Park, and the Brooklyn Botanical Garden.

4. Plan Active Weekends

Living in New York means being busy and working the entire week. But, when you do have those days off, do not choose between going out and drinking or staying in bed eating junk food. Make the most out of your weekend. Plan some activities. New York has plenty to offer. You can, for example, go boating in Central Park, go ice-skating in Rockefeller Center, go swimming in Staten Island, play some indoor sports like paintball, laser tag or arrow/ax throwing and so on. The possibilities are endless.

5. Do Yoga

Doing yoga is another great way for staying healthy in NYC. Particularly because you can do it anywhere. You can do it in your own apartment and create your own fitness plan because you only need a mat and. Or, you can do it in some of the many parks. In Central Park, there are organized yoga classes every weekend. Or you can join some yoga class in a fitness club. You will find those classes pretty much anywhere, so you should just choose one that suits your needs the most.

6. Join the Gym

However, if yoga is too slow for you, you can easily join the gym. What you will do there, depends on you. You can hire a private trainer, join a fitness class, or just work out by yourself. Again, the possibilities are endless as fitness centers are opening around every corner. There is no doubt that you will find something that will suit you. Moreover, some gyms offer free classes during the weekends, so it would be a good idea to explore your options.

7. Find Affordable Organic Shops

We all know how expensive New York City can be, and how eating healthy can be even more expensive. But, affordable organic shops do exist. You do not have to run into the first store that you see or shop at those big supermarkets. The best place to find affordable organic food is at some of the farmer's markets. You can buy your fruits and veggies there every day without breaking the bank.

8. Think Twice Before Eating Junk Food

After a hard day of working, nobody wants to go home and cook an entire meal from scratch. And buying that 2$ slice of pizza sounds like the best solution. But, think twice. It is bad for your health and you will gain weight. Nothing good will come out of it. So, if you do not have time to cook the meal after work, buy a salad, or prepare a salad from the ingredients you already have in your fridge. If you go to the farmers market twice a week, your fridge will be stocked.

9. Learn to Meal-Prep

This is another great way for staying healthy in NYC. As previously mentioned, you can visit the farmers market and buy all your week's ingredients then. So, when you have some free time, prepare your meals in advance. You can cook rice, fish, chicken, and all sorts of vegetables. If you prepare and seal those foods well, they can last for days. What is more, you will save a lot of time during the week, and a lot of money as well. You can also take these meals to eat at work.

10. Wash Your Hands Frequently

Millions of people live in New York, so you must be aware that there are numerous diseases. And the best thing you can do is to take care of your hands at least. Especially if you are using public transportation like the subway or buses. Germs can really harm you. But there is an easy solution. Just wash your hands whenever you have the chance. Or, if that is not the option, make sure to have wet wipes and hand sanitizer in your bag at all times.
